As we celebrate Pentecost, we look around for the evidence! One way we see the Spirit’s gifts is in the Edinboro area churches.

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.”

(1 Corinthians 12:4-6)

The working relationship between the Methodist – Presbyterian – Assembly of God – Episcopal – Nazarene – Catholic churches here is phenomenal. We have our Lenten and Holy Week series, Thanksgiving, and Vacation Bible School (by the way, registration forms are in the gathering space) programs together. If the weather weren’t so often against us, we’d also celebrate the Prayer for Christian Unity (in January).

But, we pastors gather regularly around Thursday lunch, except in the summer, to share issues, workshops, books, and most importantly, faith. “Working” isn’t the best word to describe this relationship, but it fits in the sense of the true fellowship and community we experience together.

Recently, the Inter Church Ministries office, the Erie County ecumenical network, came to Edinboro to do a regional gathering. They were duly impressed at the variety, frequency, and depth of our activities, and more impressed with the level of our relationships here. They are hoping to “export” what we do – that is, tell other areas of how it can be.

It is one of the added blessings of being in the Edinboro Area – the manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s work among the leaders of the local churches. Due to this, I have gotten to know people in every area church – and together we realize that we have, in fact really, one Church in Edinboro – that meets and worships in several places according to customs. What a blessing!

Fr. John

There are many gifts of the Spirit, Paul explained, although they all come from one God. The Spirit comes to each of us that we may use our gifts to work for goodness. Even though we each have a variety of gifts, together we can use them for the glory of God.

This reading is like the person who got tired of hearing the same excuse: “I'm too busy.” We all are given the same 24 hours each day and each one of us chooses how to spend them. Of course, we have responsibilities and there are probably things we would rather do, but even so, we determine how we will fill our time. It is the same with gifts. Through the Spirit we are all given gifts and it is up to us how and for whom we will use them. It is our diversity that binds us together as children of God; each one of us using our gifts for the good of all.

Today’s Reflection: 1Cor. 12: 3b-7, 12-13

During Lent, grades K-4 raised money to donate to Heifer International, and organization that purchases livestock for those who live in 3rd world nations. The recipients are trained in upkeep of the animals and are used as food producers. This year the total for all grads was nearly $640.00. The 4th grade collected the most money and chose which animals to buy. They selected 1 cow, 2 beehives, 2 flocks of chicks and 2 flocks of ducks. For their efforts all the children were treated to pizza and a movie on the last day of class. Congratulations to our youngest of servants.

Approximately 110 parishioners enjoyed a festive dinner last Monday evening for Cinco de Mayo. After a great meal our guests from Our Lady of Mercy offered a presentation on the Mission of Friendship and Sister Parish Program. Photos from our sister parish, San Augustine, plus other Mexican artifacts were on display. Parishioners were invited to write a message to our sister parish on a scroll that included a greeting in English and Spanish.

Many thanks to our Sister Parish Committee and Moe’s Southwestern Grill, who catered the taco bar.

PASTORAL COUNCIL NOTES

April 10, 2008

In attendance: Jeff Nelson, Ralph Nathal, Rob Shinsky, John Haschalk, Carrie Winslow, Barb Benedict, Mary Jane Eicholtz, Bob Gwinn, Michael Bucell, Bunnie Shinsky, Gerry Caler, Alan Dilla, Tim Pilewski, and Fr John Jacquel. Absent: Don Burke. Also present: Missy Peabody.

The meeting was called to order at 7:01 PM with Bunnie Shinsky leading us in an Easter reflection on the folded burial face cloth. The minutes of the March 13th meeting were scrutinized and accepted. Fr John spoke about the Sister Parish Committee’s desire to visit Yucatan next November as well as host a dinner & speaker on May 5th (Cinco de Mayo). Inter-Church Ministries, the parent networking ecumenical group based in Erie, met with our local pastors earlier in the day to get a good assessment of what all is happening around the county. Our first wedding will be May 3rd, followed by five others this year, and there are three people making inquiry to become Catholic at the present time. Contact has been made to assure the Cub Scouts that our parish wants to host them and to improve communication. Seder Meal and Saint Patrick’s Party were held in the same week (which may have contributed to lower turnout for each of them), and Holy Week, Easter, and First Anniversary all received glowing reviews, with a note to better publicize the Holy Thursday and Good Friday liturgies better.

The Liturgy Committee announced initial plans to celebrate the Pastor’s 25th Anniversary on June 29th with a dinner after the 10:30 Mass, and the Notre Dame Folk Group will visit the parish to lead the music and conduct a concert on Saturday, May 17th. Religious Education reported that the Famine had to be cancelled (some thought it could be done without permission slips and only four had been received). In lieu of this a summer campout is being considered. Students attended the Youth Rally in DuBois, catechists were given tokens of appreciation, Confirmation students will be on retreat at Villa Maria, PA, and grades K-4 raised over $630 during Lent for Heifer Project. Some students will be attending World Youth Day events in the Diocese (Frenchville, PA), where four of our parishioners will participate as staff. Cindy Groskiewicz will begin acting as Adult Education Coordinator, with events planned each month. Altar & Rosary will hold their tureen for members after 10:30 Mass this weekend. Building & Grounds is roughing out their budget and will hold a general clean-up day on April 26th. All are welcome to pitch in. They also sent a letter to BSI to document a second “water event” in the new church, which has already been addressed by a temporary trench and an imminent installation of a French drain. They are also looking into snow removal options, perhaps contracting someone to salt the lot, and will be grading and seeding the old Thrifty Threads site. Campus Ministry representative Carrie Winslow mentioned they had good speakers for the dinners and discussions and it looks good to send three students to Kentucky Mission trip this year. Finance Committee will conclude budget process at their May 8th meeting – offertory is 9% over budget and expenses are at 88% of expectations – we’re looking very good. The mortgage has been paid off and we have some substantial monies to apply toward more capital improvements or other priorities.

A lengthy discussion began, reviewing the “facilities” report of the Long Range Planning group. Social Hall kitchen and roof, lighting in the parking lot, computer and phone system upgrades are among the highest priorities, however before committing to particular projects, it is imperative to review the Administrative / Personnel and Educational / Spiritual reports again as well. Thus, a special meeting to do just that will be held in two weeks on April 24th beginning at 7 pm.

The meeting ended at 9:11 PM with the Renew Prayer. The next meeting of the Pastoral Council will be on the Third Thursday, May 15th at 7 PM, at the Social Hall.

                                                                                           Respectfully submitted,

                                                                                           Fr. John B. Jacquel
